All Aboard!!!
In 2017 the Victorian Miniature Railway (VMR) came to Harcourt looking to build the longest miniature railway in Australia.
In 2018 the Harcourt LIons Club in collaboration with the VMR & Castlemaine Secondary College established the Youth Engagement Program. This offered secondary college students hands-on, trade based work experience in the Community at VMR, building the miniature Railway.
The Program was a great success and more than 20 students attended most Friday's between periods 1 - 4 to build the tracks. The students worked for more than 26 weeks to complete nearly 1.5kms of track using 25,000 roofing screws to attach 660 lengths of track to nearly 8000 recycled plastic railway sleepers. The student also successfully completed their Construction Induction cards; first aid training and an awareness session in the safe use & operation of plant & equipment as part of the experience.
In late 2018 the students also assisted the College, VMR & Lions Club to successful secure $198K of Pick My Project funding to build the miniature railway station in 2019.
In 2019 the Harcourt Lions Club was notified by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) that our 2018 Youth Engagement Program had been nominated and had won a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Partnership Award.
We wish to acknowledge the amazing work of the volunteers at the Victorian Miniature Railway, Harcourt & District Lions Club and the commitment of the Castlemaine Secondary College staff, involved in providing practical, trade based work experiences to the VCAL, Flexible Learning Option (FLO) and Nalderun Project students. The success of the 2018 Youth Engagement Program has meant that the Program continues in 2019 and 2020, with the grateful support of the Harcourt Community and the Mount Alexander Shire Council.
